New Years Resolutions for 2010
Posted by Hans Haupt in Hans' Milieu, Life, Personal on January 10th, 2010
Can you believe that it is 2010? We are already a decade into the ‘new’ millennium.
To mark this special year, which also happens to be divisible by 5 and you all know how much I love numbers, I have committed myself to 10 resolutions for this new year.
I actually had a grand plan of revealing each resolution on each new day of the first 10 days of the new year via Twitter. Unfortunately, this did not work out as planned. Nevertheless, this is the long awaited and eventual blog post to sum everything up. Without further ado, I present to you, my new years resolutions for 2010:
Relax, just do it!
Posted by Hans Haupt in Entertainment, Hans' Milieu, Internet, Life, Personal on August 13th, 2009
For the last several months I have been toying with the idea of truly making my blog, or should I say website, my own. That time has finally come.
From Hans’ Milieu’s humble beginnings with Microsoft’s Windows Live Spaces back in 2005, all the way to the eventual progression of my blog to the Wordpress platform last month, I have always wanted to make my blog my own. However, I did not have the courage to do so; no matter how many times my intuition whispered ‘relax, just do it’. That is, not until late last week when, in the spur of a radical moment, I did what I have been longing to do. With absolute confirmation having only arrived early yesterday morning, my envisioned plan for my website has finally become a reality.
I am immensely proud to announce that now, after almost four years, I officially and finally own Hans’ Milieu (© 2009 Hans Haupt, All rights reserved) as well as the domain www.HansHaupt.com. I still cannot get over the fact that I now have my own, self-maintained island of information, that anyone on the Internet can holiday on. It truly is an amazing feeling!
Consequently, I now have absolute freedom to do whatever I want with my website. That said, I do have a myriad of ideas bouncing within the confines of my cranium, waiting to be unleashed on the unsuspecting masses. However, I do have a lot of learning to do, both in terms of programming skills and my Masters, before I will be able to actually gain a comprehensive understanding of how to nurture my website into all that it can be. With that said, the first aspect on my new agenda is creating a logo and potential slogan for Hans’ Milieu. So stay tuned!
Lastly, I would just like to give a quick shout-out to my parents and our gracious Lord God. If it was not for their continued love and support, through both the good times and the bad, Hans’ Milieu would most probably have been shelved several years ago. They have given me the strength to ‘Relax and just do it’! Thank you for everything that you do, I love you!
Until the next time “Milieunairs”!

Hans’ Milieu reaches 13 000 views and counting!
Posted by Hans Haupt in Hans' Milieu, OMG, Personal, Seriously?! on March 23rd, 2009
Yes, you read that correctly Milieu Pals. Hans’ Milieu has officially had 13 000 views. Whoop whoop!
That equates to approximately 309 views per month, or just under 10 views per day, since the creation of Hans’ Milieu, way back in June of 2005.
Not too bad, even if I say so myself.
Honestly, I am actually pleasantly surprised by the total number of views my blog has received. Granted it may not seem like a lot to regular and more popular bloggers, especially those who have a dedicated following, however, in my mind, it certainly is not a figure to be disregarded.
Consequently, I would like to give an extremely warm and grateful ‘thank you’ to all Milieu Pals, whether new or old. This milestone could not have been acquired without you! Merci beaucoup!
Here are a few (since I could not find many; feel free to share if you know anymore) interesting facts concerning the number 13 000:
-
Bolivia’s administrative capital, La Paz, is the highest capital city in the world at about 13,000 ft above sea level (source).
-
Since radio waves travel at 186,000 miles (299,274 km) per second and sound waves saunter at 700 miles (1,126 km) per hour, it is possible for a broadcasted voice to be heard 13,000 miles (20,917 km) away, before it can be heard at the back of the room in which it originated (source).
-
A marine census has documented more than 13,000 species in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, including several hundred that may be new to science. The surveys surprisingly turned up dozens of species found in both seas, despite a separation of 13,000 kilometres (source).
Until the next time Milieu Pals.
(P.S.: 13 007 views now… and rising! Ha ha)
Erase and… rewind?!

Okay, seriously. How many times am I going to say this?!
I have had an epiphany, of sorts. Well, I am not sure if you could actually call it that, but let us just go with it for now.
Over the last few weeks I have come to the shocking conclusion that I am no longer one of a handful of South Africans to have a blog. Yes, I know, how naive of me *rolls eyes and slaps own wrists*. Where once upon a time, almost four years ago, that statement may have wrung true, it is bewilderingly no longer the case. The feeling, I would imagine, is similar to discovering that one has not one, but several illegitimate children, all battling it out for attention of mother superior.
Consequently, Hans’ Milieu will, for the umpteenth time, be sent to the operating table for some slight nipping and tucking. However, this is not to change the visual style of the blog (although that is not entirely out of the question), but merely to re-evaluate my writing style. As it so happens, I will be reverting back to my original ‘style’ of writing, the personal no hands barred kind. Really, this will be a breath of fresh air, not only for myself, but, most certainly, for you the reader. Subsequently I will make it my goal to breathe new life into this ageing blog of mine.
For the keen eyed among you, you will see a South African Blogger Award badge to the left of Hans’ Milieu. If you click on the badge, you will be taken to the SA Blogger Award website where you can submit a nomination for yours truly. I have already submitted a nomination for myself, go figure, as well as for Louisa and Freddy. For those who have been with Hans’ Milieu for all of these years, I would just like you to know, that I would appreciate a nomination. Okay, that is enough grovelling on my part
Something else I have been thinking about recently, is how should I end off my blog posts? I have noticed that some people use signature phrases, like Freddy’s “light and love to all”, whereas others just end the post, without any kind of conclusion. Personally, I would prefer to have some kind of signature. Then again, is one really necessary if the blog only has one author?
I do remember, what feels like a lifetime ago, that I used to use the phrase “until the next time Milieu Pals”… Okay… I just had a nostalgic moment. You know what?! I actually still like that phrase and do believe that I will continue to use it.
Anyway, I am off to torture my body now… the perils of the gym await…
Until the next time Milieu Pals! (Ha Ha! I really do like that)!
Huh?! Looking for older posts?

Dearest Milleunairs,
If you are looking for any Hans’ Milieu posts pre-dating the 1st January 2009, please click here.
I have attempted to move as many posts from Hans’ Milieu’s original location to the new site. However it is an incredibly time consuming process as each post needs to be moved over individually.
I do apologies for the inconvenience, but you will learn to get over it!
To the future “Milieunairs”!

The year of the ‘New’
Posted by Hans Haupt in Hans' Milieu, Life, Personal, Seriously?! on December 31st, 2008
Regular visitors to my blog (Wishful thinking, right?) will notice that the site has undergone a few stylistic changes. The change has occurred for a few reasons:
-
Hans’ Milieu was too ‘cluttered’, resulting in long load times, and needed to be streamlined
-
A new look for a new year
-
I’m sure there is another reason but between my throbbing ear and lack of sleep I just can’t think of anything else right now… except maybe of food *Hans stars blankly at the laptop screen for several moments, eardrums pounding all the while, bats his scratchy sleep deprived eyelids and proceeds to wipe the drool from his mouth – all while offering venomously furtive glances at his little cousin whose slowed breathes indicate a deep peaceful coma like sleep*
-
Man… I’m hungry. Ravenous in fact. It feels like I am being eaten alive from the inside out. Okay… I need to focus… *Hans disappears to the kitchen for a snack – Yummy, leftovers: chicken Parmesan*
-
Ah, much better… Oh… where was I?
So 2009 will be the year of the ‘New’. What that means exactly, I have not fully decided, but I reckon it will, unsurprisingly, have to do with ‘new’ experiences in love, life and studies/work/play… in everything really.
Speaking of new. A few posts back I mentioned that I was attempting a physical transition from ‘Flab to Fab’ – a 16 week challenge to turn my flabby self into something fabulous. Well… that 16 week period ended three weeks ago. The results? Enough fab to dither the flab, but still enough flab to denounce the fab.
In other words, although my strength and size have improved, there is not yet enough definition. For example: With a light press I can feel the rippling washboard that is my abdominal region, however I just can’t physically see it *sigh*.
I have not given up hope though and look forward to obtaining that ‘Men’s Health’ look within 2009. For now, I have posted a few pictures to indicate my ‘progress’ (the pictures were taken this holiday season). The fact that I have posted a photograph of myself without a shirt on (those who know me will know how big a deal this actually is, for a variety of reasons) is testament to the improvements in self confidence one can gain through exercise.
The ‘new’ year is almost upon us, only 15 odd hours to go. Have you got your new years resolutions ready? I have a few, but I have yet to put pen to paper and jot them down. What an old adage. It no longer reflects the times, in the literal meaning, and really should be updated. Let’s see… putting ‘fingers to the keyboard’? Heh heh. Or, even simpler, ‘post it to my blog’. Well, something to that effect. If you have any suggestions, I would like to here them, so please don’t hesitate to post them in the comments section. Without further ado, here are some of my ‘resolutions’ for 2009, listed in no particular order:
-
Blog more often
-
Get that ‘Men’s Health’ look – Abs people, abs!
-
Attempt to upgrade my Masters study to a Doctorate
-
Finalise our move to Australia
-
Attempt to do at least one A.R.K. (Act of Random Kindness) a day
Some good news… the ear appears to have stopped throbbing. I will still have to get it sorted today though, don’t want the same thing to happen to me again tomorrow. Okay, it is the last day of the year, so I am going to attempt to make the most of it… whatever that entails! Heh heh!

Say What?
